Avengers assemble…again! And be sure to bring Joss Whedon with you! Disney is doing just that, as Disney CEO and Chairman Bob Iger told analysts during a stockholders’ conference call today today that Whedon is returning to captain the sequel to the unbelievably successful Marvel hit The Avengers.

Largely credited for making Avengers the $1.5 billion movie it turned out to be, the Buffy the Vampire Slayer creator will write and direct a follow-up to the adventures following Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Captain America (Chris Evans) and the rest of the Avengers. Vulture’s 100 Most Valuable Movie Stars

Jeremy Renner went from “Who’s that guy?” obscurity (2009’s The Hurt Locker) to badass sleeveless superhero in the film with the biggest opening-weekend box office of all time (2012’s The Avengers), and it only took three short years. (Oh, and did we mention he picked up a couple of Academy Award nominations within those three years as well? Because he totally did.) Of course, Renner had appeared in well over a dozen feature films before landing his career-changing lead in The Hurt Locker, but it was that Oscar-nominated performance which coaxed studios to see the 41-year-old actor as their potential Next Big Action Star. Since his breakthrough in 2009, Renner’s maintained a phenomenal track record in both critically and commercially successful films, from the over-the-top spy sequel Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol to the Ben Affleck-directed crime drama The Town. The press-averse Renner tends to keep a low profile and, as a result, has garnered relatively little interest from the tabloids or glossies save for the occasional Renner-in-a-tux-on-the-red-carpet pictorial or Q&A.

This summer, all eyes will be on Renner’s takeover of the franchise made famous by Matt Damon in The Bourne Legacy. Can he carry a beloved franchise instead of simply excelling in an ensemble? While he waits to find out, Renner’s trying out other genres. He’ll play a magician with Marion Cotillard and Joaquin Phoenix in an untitled James Grey film and then a grown-up Hansel in the delayed action-fantasy Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters.

Matt Damon Approves of Jeremy’s ‘Bourne’
Filed Under: 'The Bourne Legacy', News • Posted on July 15th, 2012 by Rachel • No Comments

Matt Damon may be attending (his first!) Comic-Con to promote the super secret sci-fi flick Elysium, but that doesn’t mean rabid fans of the Bourne trilogy aren’t wondering whether Jason Bourne himself won’t return to the action franchise at some point in the future.

“No, I mean, I think everyone wants to see how this one does,” Matt told us exclusively when we asked whether there was talk of him returning for a fifth film. So how does Matt think Jeremy Renner will do carrying on his legacy?

“I’ve only seen the trailer. But he looks great in it,” Damon revealed about his successor. “When Paul Greengrass [director of Bourne Ultimatum and Supremacy] and I were talking about potentially doing a fourth one years ago and then handing it off to someone, Renner was the guy we talked about because I’m a huge fan of his. I think he’s great. And I think he fits really well in that world, like, I really believe him in that world. So I think he’ll be terrific.”

Which only means that if the two were to team up the result would be even more terrific.

“I think the movie will be really good. Tony [Gilroy] is really smart, he’s a really good writer and a really good director and I’m sure he made a good movie,” Matt explained to us. “The question will be if they can franchise that movie, because if they can, then they’ll be done with me. They’ll just keep making those.”
